PM Modi inaugurates and lays foundation stone of multiple projects in Shillong


Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Government has gone beyond the conversion of the ‘Look East’ policy to ‘Act East’, and now its policy is ‘Act Fast for Northeast’ and ‘Act First for Northeast’ highlighting that the Northeast is the gateway to South -East Asia and can become a center for the development of the entire region.

The Prime Minister arrived at Shillong, Meghalaya earlier today to chair the North Eastern Council’s golden jubilee celebration besides inaugurating, dedicating and laying the foundation stone of multiple projects worth over 2,450 crores rupees. The Prime Minister inaugurated the sprawling campus of the IIM-Shillong at the New Shillong Township while also addressing a public meeting at the Polo grounds. Accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other dignitaries including Union Ministers from the region, Governors, Chief Ministers, DoNER Minister, and several MPs of all eight North Eastern states, the PM inaugurated the Shillong-Diengpasoh Road constructed with an aim to provide better connectivity to the new Shillong satellite township and decongest the existing Shillong city.

The Prime Minister also virtually inaugurated four other road projects in the State and those in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. A Spawn Laboratory at Mushroom Development Centre and a Beekeeping Development Centre was also inaugurated. He also inaugurated the 4G networks in remote ‘uncovered’ villages of Meghalaya. 21 Hindi libraries in Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Assam were also inaugurated virtually from here as well as laid the foundation stone of six road projects across the state, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

During his address at the public meeting today, the Prime Minister highlighted the success of peace initiatives in the region, and said that many peace agreements have been signed, inter-state boundary agreements have been done and there has been a marked reduction in instances of extremism. The Prime Minister further said that in the last eight and half years, after coming to power the development that the Government has brought in the region is immense. He added that infrastructure, connectivity, social sector and many others are a testament to the commitment of the Government.

He said that with the launch of the PM-DevINE scheme, the infrastructure projects in the Northeast have gained more momentum. He added that the Government is also working on improving digital connectivity in the Northeast by increasing the optical fibre network.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah who is also the chairman of the North Eastern Council also mentioned various developmental works taken up by the Government through NEC over the past eight years. He said that the development initiative brought under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is immense and now the funding is reaching the last village in the region. He also spoke on the removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from many regions of the Northeast and said that insurgency has been reduced to a large extent in the region.
