A gold mine collapsed in eastern Mali, killing 42 people and injuring many others. According to local officials, the accident happened on Saturday at Bilali Koto in Dabia commune. Mohamed Dicko, the government representative in Kenieba district, confirmed the death toll. Authorities are still checking if the mine, run by Chinese nationals, was legal.
This is the second mine accident in Mali this year. Last month, a landslide killed several miners, mostly women, in the Koulikoro region. Mali is one of Africa’s top gold producers.
