Food poisoning – 15 school students hospitalised; Govt orders termination of hostel warden and caretaker


A significant number of female students of Agartala Bodhjung Girls Higher Secondary School on Thursday were hospitalised after falling ill shortly after consuming the breakfast meal served in their hostel.

The incident took place at around 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Bodhjung Girls Higher Secondary School campus, after the students reached their school and complained of illness. Alarmed by the incident, the school authority immediately shifted them to the Agartala GBP Hospital.

Around 50 children from Bodhjung girl's HS school had their food in an NGO-run boarding school. At around 11 a.m., the children experienced stomach pain. Those who fell sick had been shifted to the GB hospital for treatment. As many as 15 children were shifted to the hospital.

Following the incident, the Chief Minister Dr Manik, who visited the ill students in the hospital had ordered an enquiry into the incident and thereafter after a proper enquiry, the state Tribal Welfare department in its order on Thursday evening ordered for termination of the hostel warden and the caretaker with an immediate effect.

The order stated, “During the inspection of the hostel, it is found that the hostel is not as per the hygiene required in hostel premises. It is also reported that the boarders are not being provided meal as per the food menu circulated by the tribal welfare department.”

The order to the authority of the Maharaja Bir Bikram Welfare Residential Hostel in Indranagar further stated that the department will take strict action against the society if the authority fails to submit a copy of the termination of hostel warden and caretaker to the department by June 21 next.
