UN Chief Calls for De-escalation Leading to Ceasefire in Israel-Iran Conflict
Jun 19, 2025
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has renewed his call for an immediate de-escalation in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, urging both sides to step back from the brink and pursue diplomacy.
Guterres expressed deep concern over the growing violence and its potential to spill over into a wider regional confrontation. He warned that any further military action could have “enormous consequences” not only for the Middle East but also for global peace and security.
“I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to avoid actions that could lead to a broader international conflict,” Guterres stated. He condemned the mounting civilian casualties, reiterating that protecting innocent lives must remain a top priority.
Stressing that diplomacy is “the only viable path forward,” the UN chief appealed to the international community to support efforts aimed at mediation and dialogue. His remarks come amid rising fears of a regional war, with multiple world leaders calling for urgent ceasefire negotiations.
The UN continues to coordinate with regional partners and humanitarian agencies to monitor the situation and provide assistance to those affected by the violence.
