Severe Cyclonic Storm Michaung makes landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh


The Michaung Cyclone Storm is currently positioned off-coast at 20 km East of Ongole and 50 km South west of Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh. The system is likely to move northwards along the coast close to Bapatla. The forward sector of the cyclone system has entered the land. Landfall process is continuing and is likely to continue for the next three hours.

With landfall process continuing near Bapatla region in Andhra Pradesh, red alert has been sounded in the adjoining districts of Bapatla, Prakasam, Palnadu, Guntur, Krishna, NTR, Eluru.  Rainfall is gradually on a downward trend in Nellore, Tirupati districts of Andhra Pradesh and the districts of Northern Tamil Nadu including Chennai city since this morning. The departure and arrival of flights from Chennai, Tirupati, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam remain restricted. The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh held a high-level meeting at 12 noon and directed the officials to restore electricity and road connectivity in the cyclone impacted Nellore and Tirupati districts. About 9500 people have been evacuated to 211 cyclone relief centres in Andhra Pradesh. NDRF and State Disaster Management Authority are working round the clock to provide rescue and rehabilitation measures. The Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy has kept five naval ships loaded with relief material and medical teams ready for emergency rescue measures.
