FIH Pro League 2024-25: Deepika’s early strike not enough as India suffer 5-1 defeat to Belgium
Jun 22, 2025
India’s woes in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 continued on Saturday as the women’s team suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat to Belgium in Antwerp. Despite an early breakthrough from Deepika, the hosts staged a dominant comeback, scoring all five of their goals from penalty corners.
India made a bright start, with Deepika converting in the 6th minute to give her side a 1-0 lead. However, that advantage was short-lived. Belgium responded with a clinical display of set-piece execution, led by Hélène Brasseur who struck twice. Lucie Breyne, Ambre Ballenghien, and Charlotte Englebert also got on the scoresheet to round off a commanding performance.
The defeat marks India’s fifth consecutive loss in the league and leaves them struggling near the bottom of the table. With just 10 points from 13 matches, India currently sit in seventh place, while Belgium, riding high on form, are in third place with 28 points.
India will have little time to recover, as they are set to face Belgium again on Sunday in the second match of their European leg.
