Reigning world and Olympic javelin champion Neeraj Chopra is set to make his much-awaited comeback at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 tonight, marking his first appearance at the prestigious athletics meet after two consecutive years of injury-forced absences.
Chopra’s event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 PM IST (7:00 PM local time) at the Městský Stadion in Ostrava. The competition is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series and is in its 64th edition this year. Considered one of the top-tier track and field events outside the Diamond League, the Golden Spike consistently draws some of the world's leading athletes.
The Indian javelin ace was previously scheduled to compete at Ostrava in both 2023 and 2024 but withdrew on each occasion due to injuries. This year's return is especially meaningful as the meet is directed by Jan Železný, Chopra’s coach and a Czech javelin legend himself.
Chopra arrives in the Czech Republic in strong form, having recently won the Paris Diamond League with a best throw of 88.16 meters. Reports also suggest he has crossed the elusive 90-meter mark in training, a milestone he is yet to officially achieve in competition.
Tonight’s javelin field is stacked with elite talent, including Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch (Czech Republic) and reigning world champion Haruka Kitaguchi (Japan), setting the stage for a high-stakes contest.
This comeback is being closely watched by fans and athletics experts alike, as Chopra prepares for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year. A strong performance tonight will further solidify his status as one of the top contenders for global glory.
