OIL Discovers Hydrocarbons in Dibrugarh, Assam
Jul 16, 2025Oil India Limited (OIL) has announced the discovery of hydrocarbons in the Namrup Borhat-1 well, located in Assam’s Dibrugarh district. This discovery marks a major milestone in the state's energy sector, as it strengthens Assam’s position in the oil and gas industry.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the discovery as a significant step towards enhancing the state's energy security and economic resilience. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “@OilIndiaLimited has discovered hydrocarbon presence in Namrup Borhat-1 well, a well where the Government of Assam holds a significant stake.”
The Chief Minister further emphasized the historic nature of the find, stating, “This discovery makes Assam the first state government to be a direct oil producer, making exploration efforts successful. It empowers Assam with revenue, royalties, and ensures a steady supply of energy for the country.”
He described the discovery as a “proud moment” for the state, reinforcing Assam’s role as a crucial player in India’s energy landscape.
