Member of Parliament and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Thursday sought the intervention of the Ministry of Civil Aviation over international tag to Agartala Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport and demanded the center for establishing immigration check post in the airport.
Deb highlighted the significant upgrade of the MBB airport, pointing out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a state-of-the-art terminal in 2022.
Addressing the lower house of the parliament on Thursday, Deb said that the new terminal is equipped to handle 1,200 passengers, which caters to both domestic and international flights and boasts 20 check-in counters. Further illustrating the airport’s readiness for international operations, Deb mentioned the installation of an Instrument Landing System and comprehensive ground lighting.
He further mentioned that the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, had declared it as a Customs Checkpost on January 4, 2023. Announcement from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, regarding the immigration check post at the airport is still awaited, he added.
Deb urged the Civil Aviation Minister to liaise with the Home Ministry to expedite this notification. He asserted that upgrading MBB airport to international status would greatly benefit the people of Tripura and enhance connectivity for the northeastern region.
