Minimum daily wages for tea garden workers in Tripura increased: Minister Tinku Roy

The Government of Tripura has officially revised the minimum daily wages for tea garden workers, effective from April of the current financial year. Labour Minister Tinku Roy announced the wage hike during a press conference held at the state secretariat on Friday.

As per the new wage structure, adult tea garden workers (both male and female) will now receive ₹204 per day, up from the previous rate of ₹176. Similarly, minor workers will earn ₹102 per day, increased from ₹88. This revision marks a 16% increase in the minimum wage.

The last wage revision for tea garden workers in the state was implemented in January 2018. The wage hike comes in response to longstanding demands from tea garden workers. To address these demands, the state government formed a 10-member committee for six months, chaired by MLA Swapna Das Paul of the 46-Surma Assembly Constituency.

The committee was tasked with reviewing and recommending revised minimum wages, taking into account the varied nature of work in tea plantations. An important discussion meeting was held on May 28, 2025, with key stakeholders in attendance, including: Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Secretary of Indian Tea Association (Surma Valley Branch) Sanjay Bagchi, President of K.K. Nagar TSSS Ltd. Jaydeb Sarkar.

Following comprehensive deliberations, the committee recommended a 16% increase in wages, which has since been approved by the state government.

Minister Roy emphasized the current government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of tea garden workers. Initiatives include: Distribution of land rights (patta) to 3,166 out of 6,585 tea worker families, Issuance of priority group ration cards to 4,922 families, Inclusion of all tea worker families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) for housing, Enhanced access to drinking water, sanitation, electricity, and other basic amenities.

Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Samir Ranjan Ghosh, MLA Swapna Das Paul and Labour Department Secretary T.K. Debnath were also present at the press conference.
