Agartala, Oct 1: A 75-year-old man from Chandrapur in Udaipur, Gomati district, was discharged on Thursday after undergoing successful rectal cancer surgery at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre (ABVRCC), according to the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tripura.
The patient had been suffering from rectal bleeding and severe abdominal pain for a long time. He first visited the hospital's outpatient department on July 2, where doctors conducted a preliminary examination and referred him to the surgery department.
Specialists in the surgery department carried out further tests, which confirmed the presence of cancer in the rectum. Doctors found that the tumour could be removed through surgery and advised the procedure accordingly.
The patient was admitted under the supervision of surgery department specialists on September 10. On September 21, doctors performed the operation using the laparoscopic low anterior resection method.
According to the department, this is among the first such rectal cancer surgeries carried out through the laparoscopic low anterior resection technique under specialist supervision in the state.
The patient was kept under observation for nine days following the surgery. He was discharged on Thursday after doctors confirmed he had recovered well.
Reportedly, the patient and his family members thanked the hospital's cancer specialists and healthcare staff for the treatment, noting that they did not have to travel outside the state.
The department said ABVRCC holds an important place in cancer care in the northeast, with specialists at the centre treating increasingly complex cases and performing intricate surgeries. Moreover, treatment at the hospital, including such surgeries, continues to be provided free of cost to patients.
