Agartala: Tripura Police seized around 340 bottles of Eskuf syrup, part of it hidden inside the tyres of a car, at the Ambassa naka checkpoint in Dhalai district, one of three major narcotics operations reported across the state in recent days. Police said around 100 bottles were first found concealed inside the tyres of a Hyundai car during a routine check. A further search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the remaining consignment. The car's driver, Akhilesh Roy, a resident of Patna, Bihar, was arrested.
The vehicle, bearing registration number AS-01DN-4909, was also found fitted with a fake number plate, WB-02AK-2526. Preliminary investigation suggested the car was travelling from Dharmanagar towards Agartala. The name of a person from Kumarghat also surfaced during questioning. Ambassa Police Station has launched an investigation to trace the syrup's intended destination and identify others involved. Meanwhile, in Unakoti district, police seized banned phensedyl worth around Rs 10 lakh from the Chinibagan naka point in Kailashahar. The seizure came days after journalists submitted a deputation to the district Superintendent of Police demanding stronger anti-drug operations, and within 24 hours of an earlier seizure of narcotics worth around Rs 40 lakh in Kumarghat town.
A luxury car was seized during the raid, and two persons from Kailashahar's Srinathpur area were detained on charges of drug trafficking. Local residents alleged that the accused had long been involved in the narcotics trade in the district and questioned why regular surveillance had not been maintained along the route despite persistent complaints. In the third case, a joint team of police and security forces recovered 520 kg of dried ganja, worth an estimated Rs 1 crore, from a forest under Sidhai police station in West Tripura. Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Asish Dasgupta said the operation, involving Sidhai police, the BSF and the CRPF, was conducted based on specific intelligence.
The ganja was found stashed in sacks and scattered across the forest, apparently intended for trafficking. No arrests were made in this case. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway.
