India Emerges as Trusted Semiconductor Partner

Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said India is emerging as a trusted partner in the global semiconductor industry, with the country focusing on building reliable supply chains, strengthening chip design capabilities and developing a long-term semiconductor ecosystem.

Speaking at a fireside chat at Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi, Vaishnaw said trust is critical to the semiconductor industry, particularly in protecting intellectual property and enabling global companies to design and develop end-to-end products in India.

He said trusted supply chains could become one of India's key strengths as the country expands its presence in the global semiconductor sector.

Vaishnaw said India has set a target of training 85,000 semiconductor design engineers over 10 years, of whom around 70,000 have already been trained in the past four years. Students across the country are now involved in chip design and tape-outs, while around 400 engineering colleges have access to industry-grade Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools.

The minister stressed the need for a clear 20-year roadmap for the semiconductor sector, describing it as one of the world's most complex industries. He said India's approach is to establish a strong foundation for sustained and long-term growth.

Under India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 (Semicon 2.0), the government is focusing on six key areas — chip design, materials, fabrication, Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP), research and development, and storage.

Speaking to the media later, Vaishnaw said around 30 companies from one country were participating across the pavilions at Semicon India. He also highlighted the strong enthusiasm and curiosity shown by students towards the sector.

According to the minister, India's growing semiconductor industry is expected to generate more than one lakh jobs.

Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were also exchanged and new collaborations announced during Semicon India 2026, aimed at strengthening India's semiconductor ecosystem.
