Minister for Power, Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Ratan Lal Nath, paid a rare tribute to the farming community on Thursday, personally washing the feet of farmers and wiping them with a traditional gamcha at a special event held in Mohanpur.
The programme, titled "Annadata Krishak Samman o Seva," was organised by Mohanpur Mandal to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday. Beyond the symbolic gesture, Nath went a step further by sitting down and sharing a meal with the farmers — an act he described as a genuine expression of gratitude rather than a ceremonial formality.
Addressing the gathering, the minister called farmers the true "annadatas" — providers of food — whose toil sustains families, society and the nation at large. "Respecting farmers is synonymous with respecting the nation," Nath told the audience, reaffirming his government's commitment to serving and honouring the farming community.
The minister said he felt "proud, happy and deeply grateful" for the opportunity to pay tribute to farmers in this manner, adding that he hoped the initiative would inspire a stronger spirit of service and commitment towards those who work the land.
The event underscored the state government's continued outreach to Tripura's agricultural community, with Nath positioning it as part of a broader effort to recognise farmers' contributions to the nation's food security and rural economy.
