A joint operation by the Panisagar police, Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Agartala, led to the seizure of a large consignment of suspected yaba tablets from a 12-wheeler truck in North Tripura's Panisagar area.
According to police sources, around 50 kg of yaba tablets, estimated at nearly five lakh tablets, were recovered from the truck. The approximate illicit market value of the seized contraband has been put at around Rs 40 crore.
The operation was carried out on Tuesday evening at a naka point along the National Highway in the Agnipasha area. Acting on specific intelligence, the security personnel intercepted the truck, which was travelling from Assam towards Agartala, and conducted a search.
The suspected yaba tablets were reportedly found packed in 250 packets inside the vehicle.
Police have detained the truck driver, identified as Rupam Deka, 18, a resident of the Noagaon area of Guwahati, Assam. He is being questioned as investigators seek to determine the source and intended destination of the consignment.
Officials are also probing whether the seizure is linked to an interstate drug trafficking network. Investigators are attempting to identify other individuals who may have been involved in transporting or handling the contraband.
The seizure has also prompted scrutiny of the movement of the consignment after the truck entered Tripura through the Churaibari border point before being intercepted at Agnipasha.
Police and other investigating agencies are continuing their investigation, while questioning of the detained driver is underway. Authorities are also trying to trace the suspected handlers and identify the larger network allegedly involved in the trafficking operation.
The latest seizure comes amid continued efforts by enforcement agencies to curb the movement of narcotic substances through Tripura, particularly along routes connecting the state with neighbouring regions.
