The State Election Commission held two separate meetings on Wednesday to review security, law and order, voter safety and poll monitoring arrangements ahead of the Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), with senior police and district officials taking part.
As part of efforts to ensure peaceful and free polling, the Commission has deployed 74 companies of central armed police forces across the state.
The first meeting was held in hybrid mode and was attended by the Director General of Police, the Inspector General (Law and Order), District Election Officers cum District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police from various districts. According to the Commission, necessary steps have been taken by security agencies and district administrations to maintain normal law and order during the campaign period and to ensure equal opportunity for political parties and candidates.
CRPF personnel will remain deployed before, during and after the polls. Meanwhile, regular area domination exercises and flag marches are being carried out in various districts under the supervision of election and police authorities.
The Commission has directed district magistrates, collectors and superintendents of police to maintain a peaceful environment and build confidence among voters, with special emphasis on ensuring that people can exercise their franchise without any fear or intimidation. Special arrangements have also been made for the timely movement of representatives of participating political parties to their designated polling stations on polling day.
The Commission further stated that restrictions have been imposed under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. These restrictions will come into effect from 4 pm on September 26 and remain in force till 6 am on September 28.
It is learned that a mandatory 48 hour silence period before the conclusion of polling will be strictly enforced, during which no campaigning or canvassing for votes will be allowed. Election related content that could influence voters cannot be broadcast within polling areas through television, radio, cable networks, social media, digital platforms or print media. Media houses have also been advised against broadcasting debates, discussions, opinions or opinion polls that could influence voters during this period. The Commission said that any violation of these restrictions may invite punitive action under the relevant laws.
The use of loudspeakers has also been restricted to between 6 am and 10 pm, with authorities directed to ensure that children, elderly citizens and persons with special needs are not affected by excessive noise. District election officers have further been instructed to ensure basic infrastructure, including drinking water, electricity and necessary furniture, at every polling station.
In a separate meeting, the State Election Commission briefed election observers appointed for the Village Committee elections on their duties and responsibilities. The observers will monitor the election process in their respective areas, ensure transparency and uniformity, and oversee whether election rules are being properly followed. They will later submit their reports on the election process in their areas to the Commission.
