Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday urged the younger generation to learn Hindi while continuing to preserve the state’s Mizo language, culture and identity.
Addressing a Hindi Diwas celebration organised by the Mizoram Hindi Prachar Sabha at Dawrpui Multipurpose Hall in Aizawl, Lalduhoma said proficiency in Hindi was becoming increasingly important, particularly with the growing promotion and use of the language by the Union Government.
“We should learn Hindi while preserving our own culture. We should speak Hindi and enjoy Hindi songs, but without losing our identity,” he said.
The Chief Minister cautioned that neglecting the Mizo language and culture could gradually weaken the community’s distinct identity. He also highlighted the importance of Hindi for communication and employment opportunities.
Recalling his efforts to promote Hindi education in Mizoram during his tenure as an MP, Lalduhoma said recognition for Matric and Intermediate examinations in Hindi was granted in the state in 1988. Recognition for the Bachelor of Arts (BA) examination in Hindi followed in 2000.
He reiterated the need for young people to embrace Hindi as a means of expanding educational and professional opportunities while remaining firmly connected to their language, culture and heritage.
