Assam Rifles, Tripura Police Joint Operation Leads to Arrest of Two With Illegal Arms

A joint operation by the Assam Rifles and Tripura Police led to the detention of two men allegedly carrying illegal firearms and ammunition near the BSF headquarters at Shalbagan in Agartala on Monday night.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, personnel from the Assam Rifles Field Intelligence Unit, Agartala, 35 Assam Rifles and Tripura Police laid an ambush in the area at around 9:50 pm. The operation was launched after security agencies received information about two persons allegedly moving towards Agartala with firearms and ammunition.

According to police, the suspects were travelling on foot from Domdomia towards Agartala when the joint team intercepted them near Shalbagan and detained them.

The accused were identified as Suraj Kumar, 29, a resident of Lakhisarai district in Bihar, and Srikant Kumar, 36, from Vaishali district in Bihar.

During a search, the joint team allegedly recovered two pistols, three magazines and eight rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition from their possession. Two mobile phones along with SIM cards were also seized.

Police said the two men failed to produce any valid licence or other legal documents authorising them to possess the firearms and ammunition.

The weapons, ammunition and other seized items were taken into custody at the spot in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses, officials said.

The accused were subsequently handed over to Tripura Police at NCC Police Station for further legal action. They were later produced before a court, where police sought five days' custody for detailed interrogation.

The Assam Rifles and Tripura Police are now jointly investigating the source of the firearms, their intended destination and the purpose for which they were allegedly being transported. Investigators are also examining whether the two suspects have links to a wider arms network operating across state borders.

The operation highlights the continued coordination between the Assam Rifles and Tripura Police in acting on intelligence inputs and preventing the movement of illegal arms in the state.

Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
