Union Home Minister Amit Shah has outlined a three-year roadmap to make India drug-free by 2029, calling for a coordinated national campaign involving law enforcement agencies, governments, communities and the media.
Addressing a press conference today in Goa during his three-day visit, Shah said the government has strengthened enforcement, intelligence-sharing, financial investigations and rehabilitation measures against drug trafficking since 2019.
He said more than 1.19 crore kilograms of drugs, valued at around ₹1.89 lakh crore, were seized across the country between 2014 and 2024. During the same period, over 48.66 lakh kilograms of drugs were destroyed.
According to Shah, the roadmap will focus on four key areas: intelligence- and operations-based enforcement, tighter control of precursor chemicals and synthetic drugs, demand reduction and harm reduction, and capacity building and coordination among agencies.
Over the next three years, the government has set a target of dismantling 100 international and inter-state drug networks, bringing 100 narcotics-related fugitives back to India and destroying 100 clandestine drug laboratories.
The campaign will also seek to reach 50 crore citizens and create one lakh ‘Nasha Mukt Mitras’ to strengthen community participation in the fight against drug abuse. The number of de-addiction centres across the country will be increased to 1,751, Shah said.
Highlighting Goa's efforts, the Home Minister said the state has an Anti-Narcotics Task Force and urged the public and media to actively support the national campaign.
Shah stressed that tackling the drug menace requires not only strict enforcement but also prevention, rehabilitation and collective participation to reduce both the supply of and demand for narcotics.
