Teacher’s Day or ‘Prem Day’? Questions Over Changing Celebrations

Teachers’ Day, observed across India on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President, philosopher and educationist Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, is traditionally a day dedicated to honoring teachers and highlighting the importance of education.

However, the changing nature of celebrations at some educational institutions has sparked concern among sections of parents and guardians, who feel that the core message of Teachers’ Day is gradually being overshadowed by entertainment, cake-cutting and discussions surrounding personal relationships.

Gandhi School has come under discussion in this context, with some guardians questioning the manner in which the Teachers’ Day programme was organized. According to the guardians, Titu Sir, who they allege played a key role in organizing the event, has also become the subject of controversy over alleged political affiliations and other allegations.

Some guardians have further alleged that Titu Sir is attempting to create controversy involving the present government because of his alleged association with an opposition political party. There have also been reports and allegations concerning financial irregularities against him. However, these allegations could not be independently verified, and no conclusion should be drawn unless established through an authorized investigation or competent authority.

The controversy has nevertheless prompted a wider debate over how Teachers’ Day should be observed. Parents and members of the community have emphasized that the occasion should primarily celebrate the contribution of teachers, the teacher-student relationship and the role of education in shaping responsible citizens.

For many, the true spirit of Teachers’ Day lies not in lavish celebrations or personal displays, but in recognizing those who guide students through knowledge, values and discipline.

As celebrations evolve with time, the question being raised by concerned parents is simple: Is the original message of Teachers’ Day being lost amid the festivities?
