CJI Calls for Stronger Judicial Cooperation at BRICS Forum
Sep 05, 2026
Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant on Saturday called for greater judicial cooperation, healthy disagreement and meaningful deliberation among BRICS member states and partner countries.
Addressing delegations at the ongoing BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum in New Delhi, Justice Kant stressed the importance of ensuring the timely and predictable delivery of justice. Recalling the historic role of Nalanda University as a global centre of learning that welcomed students and researchers without discrimination or barriers, he said BRICS should also be regarded as a “living Nalanda University”.
The gathering was also addressed by President of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court Luiz Edson Fachin and Chief Justice of China Zhang Jun, among others.
Speaking during a session on mediation, Justice Kant said that as trade and commercial ties between countries expand, businesses require dispute-resolution mechanisms that are efficient, credible and capable of working across different legal and commercial cultures.
He called for stronger cooperation among mediation institutions, greater professional training, multilingual capabilities and regular dialogue between judges, mediators, lawyers and the business community.
Justice Kant said India has made significant efforts in recent years to place mediation at the centre of its justice system. He highlighted the nationwide “Mediation for the Nation” initiative, which has brought mediation into greater public and institutional focus, adding that the results have been encouraging.
“Mediation must be strengthened so that dialogue can prevail, commerce can continue and trust can grow,” the CJI said, emphasising the need for closer cooperation among BRICS members and partner countries.
Four substantive sessions were held during the Forum on Mediation and International Commercial Disputes; Cross-Border Enforcement of Arbitral Awards; Artificial Intelligence and the Judiciary; and Judicial Leadership and Sustainable Development.
The Forum provided an opportunity for judicial leaders to exchange experiences and strengthen cooperation on emerging legal, technological and institutional challenges confronting the justice systems of BRICS member states and partner countries.
