The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 1,282, with more than 5,000 people still reported missing, according to authorities.
Nepal Police said Chitwan recorded the highest number of fatalities at 359, followed by Nawalparasi East with 218, Nawalparasi West with 208, Nuwakot with 185, Rasuwa with 140, Gorkha with 72, Dhading with 60, and Tanahu with 38. Two additional deaths were reported at hospitals in Kathmandu.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said that 5,053 people were reported missing as of Thursday evening. Authorities have also begun using DNA testing to identify victims as rescue and recovery operations continue.
In a remarkable rescue, two men were found alive inside a tunnel at Nepal’s Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project, 10 days after they were trapped following the Bhotekoshi flash floods. According to the Nepal Army’s Public Relations Directorate, rescuers intensified the operation after hearing voices from inside the tunnel and establishing communication with the trapped men.
Emergency response teams have rescued more than 12,000 people so far.
The flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, devastated towns and villages across northern and central Nepal, causing widespread destruction and leaving thousands of families affected.
