Health Officer Leads Food Safety Crackdown in Udaipur, Violators Penalized

A joint enforcement squad led by Gomati District Health Officer Dr. Shubhendu Debbarma cracked down on substandard food businesses in Matabari on Thursday, slapping fines on violators, confiscating adulterated stocks, and halting operations at three local ice cream manufacturers.

The coordinated exercise brought together the Health, Food Safety, and Legal Metrology departments to protect consumer health and enforce mandatory standards across Udaipur.

The inspection team visited three ice cream manufacturing facilities, a prominent shopping mall, and a hotel. While inspecting the ice cream units, officials focused on production surroundings, labeling compliance, and manufacturing standards.

Several units were found lacking basic sanitary conditions, with packages missing legally mandated manufacturing and expiration details. Officials also seized stocks of harmful food coloring agents.

Consequently, legal action was taken, financial penalties were levied, and the three manufacturing plants were ordered closed until they demonstrate complete compliance with hygiene requirements.

In addition, the enforcement team uncovered expired food items during their inspection of a shopping mall. The affected inventory was promptly confiscated, and legal proceedings were initiated against the retailer.

Meanwhile, stale food and spices found inside a hotel refrigerator were discarded and destroyed on the spot, and official samples were drawn for laboratory quality assessment.

During the drive, officials asked commercial operators to observe food safety regulations, maintain clean preparation areas, and follow packaging guidelines.

Health authorities affirmed that regular surveillance will continue across Gomati district to ensure food safety, while urging citizens to stay vigilant and verify packaging details, manufacturing dates, and shelf-life labels whenever buying food.
