Roadside Parking of Heavy Vehicles Turns Deadly on Tripura Roads Especially at Night
Sep 03, 2026
Roadside parking of heavy vehicles along the Dharmanagar-Panisagar road has narrowed the carriageway and forced oncoming traffic into risky manoeuvres, with several deaths already reported in collisions with parked lorries, raising fresh concern over unchecked roadside parking across Tripura.
The problem is most visible along the stretch running from Krishnapur through Jorculvert to Batarasi Road under Yuvarajnagar assembly constituency, where tankers, goods laden lorries and other heavy vehicles are seen parked on both sides of the road almost daily. In several cases, the vehicles remain parked for hours or even days at a stretch, reducing the effective width of the carriageway.
Residents allege that many truck drivers from areas such as Latugaon, Upthakhali, Lalcherra, Dhupirband and Mangalkhali park their vehicles along the road and return home several kilometres away, leaving the vehicles unattended for long periods. According to residents, the danger is greatest at night, when poor street lighting makes the parked lorries difficult to spot, posing a particular risk to bike riders.
Meanwhile, a similar pattern has been observed in Agartala, the state capital, where private vehicles parked along roadsides have, at times, blocked passage for emergency vehicles at night.
Residents along the Dharmanagar-Panisagar road have demanded an immediate ban on illegal parking of heavy vehicles, along with increased traffic surveillance and adequate street lighting. They said preventive measures are more urgent than compensation after accidents occur.
