IPFT seeks closer coordination with BJP ahead of VC Polls

With Tripura’s political temperature rising ahead of the Village Committee elections, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) on Wednesday reached out to the BJP leadership in Agartala, signalling an effort to tighten coordination within the ruling alliance.
An IPFT delegation led by party president and former minister Prem Kumar Reang, general secretary Swapan Debbarma and other senior leaders met top BJP functionaries at the party’s state headquarters in Krishnanagar.
The BJP side included National General Secretary (Organisation) B. L. Santhosh, state president Abhishek Debroy, Tripura in-charge Dr Rajdeep Roy and Assam-Tripura organisational in-charge G. R. Ravindra Raju.
While the meeting was officially projected around strengthening cooperation and advancing Tripura’s development agenda, its political significance is difficult to overlook. With the Village Committee polls approaching and alliance equations being actively worked out, coordination among the BJP and its tribal allies has assumed renewed importance.
The two sides reportedly discussed political and organisational coordination at different levels, besides issues concerning the state’s overall development. IPFT leaders described the meeting as “productive” and reiterated their commitment to working with the BJP for Tripura’s interests.
The outreach comes at a politically sensitive juncture. The BJP is simultaneously engaged in discussions with Tipra Motha over a possible electoral understanding for the Village Committee polls, with seat-sharing emerging as a key issue.
Against this backdrop, the IPFT-BJP meeting could be read as an attempt to reinforce existing alliance channels and ensure greater coordination among the ruling camp as it heads into another crucial electoral contest.
For the BJP, maintaining cohesion among its tribal allies could prove critical in a contest where tribal politics remains a decisive factor. For the IPFT, closer coordination with the BJP leadership could help the party retain its relevance within the alliance framework.
With nominations for the Village Committee elections drawing closer, the latest meeting adds another layer to Tripura’s rapidly shifting alliance politics.
