BJP gears up for tribal poll battle, alliance decision imminent

With the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections drawing closer, the BJP has stepped up its organisational preparations while keeping the door open for a possible electoral alliance.
A high-level organisational meeting of the Tripura BJP was held at the party’s state headquarters on Wednesday, bringing together senior central and state leaders, ministers, MLAs and key organisational functionaries. BJP national general secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, newly appointed national general secretary Biplab Kumar Deb, national spokesperson Sambit Patra, state in-charge Dr. Rajdeep Roy and state BJP president Abhishek Debroy were among those present.
The meeting focused heavily on strengthening the party organisation at the grassroots level and chalking out its strategy for the upcoming Village Committee polls. With the election expected to test the BJP’s organisational strength in the tribal areas, the party leadership discussed mobilisation, booth-level preparedness and its broader electoral strategy.
The question of a possible alliance, however, emerged as the key political takeaway from the meeting.
State BJP president Abhishek Debroy indicated that the party was not dependent on an alliance and was fully prepared to contest the election on its own if necessary. At the same time, he said a final decision on the alliance question would be taken within the next one or two days.
The statement effectively keeps both options on the table—an alliance, if politically advantageous, or a direct contest under the BJP’s own organisational banner.
The BJP’s confidence comes at a politically crucial juncture, with rival parties also intensifying preparations for the Village Committee elections. The Left Front has already spoken of strengthening its unity in the tribal belt, while other political forces are weighing their electoral options.
With the final shape of the alliances expected shortly, the next 48 hours could prove crucial in determining the contours of the electoral contest in Tripura’s tribal areas.
The presence of senior central BJP leadership at Wednesday’s meeting also underlined the importance the party is attaching to the upcoming polls, which could emerge as an important test of its grassroots strength and political positioning in the state.
