Tripura Govt plans new flyover to ease traffic congestion in Agartala

Tripura is set to step up its road infrastructure drive, with the state government planning phased widening of the remaining state highways and a new 3.985-km flyover in Agartala to address growing traffic congestion.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha told the Assembly on Monday that 204.45 km of roads have already been upgraded to double-lane standards. The remaining highway stretches will be taken up in phases, subject to the availability of land and funds.
The announcement came in response to a question by BJP MLA Tafajjal Hossain, who also suggested an alternative alignment for the proposed Bishramganj-Melaghar-Sonamura-Belonia highway.
He proposed routing the road through Bishalgarh, Boxanagar and Sonamura, citing potential benefits to several constituencies and concerns over the Gomati river embankment and flood-prone areas.
The Chief Minister said routes connecting Bishalgarh, Boxanagar and Amtali-Sabroom are already being considered for development as full double-lane roads, depending on fund availability. Existing stretches with single, intermediate and double-lane sections will also be upgraded according to technical requirements.
On Agartala’s traffic woes, Dr. Saha said the government has no current plan to extend the existing airport-side flyover towards Amtali. Instead, a new 3.985-km double-lane flyover has been proposed, connecting Fire Brigade Chowmuhani, Care Chowmuhani, Shankar Chowmuhani and Durga Chowmuhani, before passing over Katartal towards Radhanagar Bus Stand, with further connectivity proposed to Battala.
The planned road and flyover projects are expected to strengthen intra-state connectivity while providing a long-term solution to traffic pressure in the capital.
