Anganwadi Workers Warned Against Protests During Duty Hours: Tinku

A review meeting of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department held at the Secretariat on Tuesday took up the demands of anganwadi workers, even as Minister Tinku Roy warned that halting centre operations to protest would invite action against those responsible.
The minister said the government would not tolerate anganwadi centres being kept shut so that workers could join agitations. He made clear that if allegations of workers protesting during working hours were proven, necessary action would be taken against those concerned.
Roy said the review meeting at the Secretariat examined the progress of various developmental programmes and welfare projects under the department. Alongside this, the meeting also discussed the various demands raised by anganwadi workers.
According to the minister, anganwadi workers may have genuine problems, and they have repeatedly submitted their demands to the government in writing. He said these issues were being considered by the government with due importance.
However, the minister was firm that neglecting official duties to join protests while holding government responsibilities would not be accepted under any circumstances.
He said anganwadi centres provide highly important services to children and mothers, and that any worker joining a protest in a manner that disrupts the normal functioning of a centre would be viewed seriously.
Roy further said that instructions have been issued to concerned officials to take necessary action if any complaint is received about anganwadi centres being shut down for protests.
He added that while ensuring government services remain unaffected, the government would also take initiatives to resolve workers' problems through discussion.
