Lum Pongdeng Island Excluded From Umiam Hotel Project: CM Conrad K. Sangma

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday said Lum Pongdeng Island has been completely excluded from the development plan for the proposed Umiam 5-star hotel project.
Replying to a short-duration discussion under Rule 50 of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Sangma said the decision was taken following consultations with stakeholders and concerns raised by the public.
“Lum Pongdeng Island, spread across approximately 36 acres, has been totally excluded from the development ambit of the Umiam 5-Star Hotel Project,” the Chief Minister said.
The statement came in response to a demand by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) to scrap the proposed project. Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit had raised the issue during the ongoing Autumn Session of the Assembly.
Sangma said the government took the decision after receiving representations from the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong of Ri-Bhoi. He also referred to discussions held with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on April 20, 2026.
The Chief Minister’s clarification means that while Lum Pongdeng Island has been removed from the project’s development area, the proposed Umiam 5-star hotel project itself has not been cancelled.
