Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday assured the state Assembly that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the violence in Shillong on August 19 during a black-flag bike rally organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
Making a suo motu statement on the opening day of the five-day Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Sangma said the state government had taken serious note of the incident and would leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to justice.
According to the Chief Minister, 31 vehicles were attacked and 18 people were injured in the violence. A total of 15 FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident.
Sangma said five masked suspects had been identified so far, while one person had been arrested. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been constituted to identify and prosecute all those involved in the violence.
The Chief Minister further said the Meghalaya government was coordinating with authorities in Assam to restore normalcy and ensure the smooth movement of vehicles and essential commodities between the two states.
He reiterated that the government would take all necessary steps to maintain law and order and hold those responsible for the violence accountable.
