India’s women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will take on top seeds Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China in the semifinals of the BWF Badminton World Championships at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi today.
Treesa and Gayatri stormed into the last four after defeating fourth seeds Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian of China 16-21, 21-15, 21-13 in a hard-fought quarterfinal on Friday.
The victory assured the Indian pair of a coveted World Championships medal. They have also created history by becoming only the second Indian women’s doubles combination to win a medal at the prestigious event.
Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa were the first Indian women’s doubles pair to achieve the feat, winning a bronze medal at the World Championships in London 15 years ago.
With a place in the final at stake, Treesa and Gayatri will face a formidable challenge against the Chinese top seeds. A win would take the Indian duo into the World Championships final and guarantee at least a silver medal.
The semifinal promises to be another major test for the rising Indian pair as they look to add a historic chapter to India’s badminton record.
