Meghalaya CM Speaks to Assam CM Over Violence Against Assam-Registered Vehicles in Shillong

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday said he had spoken to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following incidents of violence against Assam-registered vehicles and tourists during a black-flag bike rally in Shillong.
In a post on social media, Sangma said both state governments had agreed to work together to normalise the situation. He added that designated Cabinet ministers from Assam and Meghalaya would meet to take the discussions forward and explore measures to restore peace, trust and normalcy between the two states.
The development comes amid reports of Meghalaya-registered vehicles being stopped in the Jorabat area along the Assam-Meghalaya border. The vehicles were reportedly prevented from entering Assam following attacks on Assam-registered vehicles during the rally in Shillong.
The black-flag bike rally, organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in protest against the Meghalaya government, turned violent at several locations in Shillong on Thursday. According to police, 31 vehicles were damaged during the unrest.
Protesters allegedly pelted stones at vehicles, damaged several cars bearing Assam registration numbers, set fire to two government vehicles and assaulted pedestrians at different locations across the city.
The incidents have raised concerns over a possible escalation of tensions between the two neighbouring states, which share close social and economic ties and a busy inter-state traffic corridor.
Appealing to people in both Assam and Meghalaya to maintain peace, harmony and restraint, Sangma said the two states shared deep bonds and urged citizens to work together to protect them.
The state governments are now expected to coordinate closely to prevent further incidents and restore normal movement and confidence along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
