Tripura Govt to Absorb Power Tariff Hike with 100 Percent Subsidy

In a major relief to electricity consumers in Tripura, the state government announced that it will bear the entire financial burden of the recent power tariff hike by providing a 100 percent additional subsidy.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that the state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, took this decision to shield citizens from the mandatory tariff adjustments ordered by the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Addressing a press conference, Nath clarified the government's stance on the issue. "This is not a government announcement. It is the implementation of a promise," he said.
To neutralize the recent hike, the state treasury will release an extra Rs 117.13 crore. When combined with the existing normal subsidy of Rs 77.57 crore, the total subsidy expenditure for the current financial year will reach Rs 194.70 crore. The complete waiver applies to domestic households, small and large businesses, farmers, and industries. However, defense installations, railways, All India Radio, and Doordarshan are slated to receive a 15 percent subsidy.
The minister acknowledged the public anxiety caused by the sudden increase in fixed charges. "We have not sat as silent spectators," Nath remarked, adding that Chief Minister Saha personally flew back from Delhi to chair an emergency meeting regarding the crisis.
Consumers who have already paid their utility bills at the hiked rates since May will not lose their money. According to the minister, the extra payments will be refunded through structured adjustments in their upcoming bills for September, October, and November.
Moreover, Nath dispelled the misconception that the state government or the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited sets the rates. He explained that the independent regulatory commission issued the new order to comply with a Supreme Court mandate requiring states to clear regulatory gaps within three years, alongside the financial pressure of rising international gas prices.
"This is not the desire of any state government, this is the directive of the highest court of the country," Nath stated. He concluded with a message to the public, saying, "We have heard your pain, we have understood your agony. Today we answered it, not in words, but in a decision."
