THRC takes cognizance of undertrial's custodial death

The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken cognizance of the death of undertrial prisoner Sukra Munda, who died on August 20 at the R-ICU of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) & GB Pant Hospital during treatment, and has directed the Inspector General of Prisons to submit a detailed report within four weeks.
According to the order sheet issued by the Commission on Friday, Munda, son of late Halu Munda of Nabanagar, Kalagachiya under Sidhai Police Station, West Tripura, was in custody at Kendriya Sansudhanagar Correctional Home, Bishalgarh, since February 2, 2026, in connection with a case registered under the NDPS Act, 1985, as per the order of the Special Judge, Court No. 4, West Tripura, Agartala.
The Commission noted that Munda was referred to AGMC & GBP Hospital on August 10 on the advice of the Medical Officer-in-Charge of the correctional home hospital and was admitted to the male medicine ward the same day. He was later shifted to the R-ICU for further treatment, where he died at around 10:14 pm on August 20. His family was informed through the Officer-in-Charge, Sidhai Police Station, and asked to collect the body after completing formalities.
Since the death occurred in custody, the Commission has taken up the matter to examine its cause and circumstances. The Inspector General of Prisons has been asked to submit the inquest and post mortem reports, post mortem videography, viscera examination, and the magisterial inquiry report, besides the final cause of death based on scientific findings. A copy of the order has been sent to the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi, and the matter is listed for further hearing on October 9.
