ED Summons Assam ACS Officer Paragmani Mahanta Over Alleged ₹100-Crore Irregularities

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Paragmani Mahanta, currently serving as Director of the state’s Directorate of Geology and Mining, for questioning in connection with alleged financial irregularities and corruption involving nearly ₹100 crore.
The allegations reportedly stem from Mahanta’s tenure in several senior government positions, including his association with the Assam Mineral Development Corporation (AMDC). The ED is expected to question him about various financial transactions and alleged irregularities linked to his different official assignments. Mahanta is currently listed as the Director of the Directorate of Geology and Mining, Assam.
According to reports, one of the allegations concerns Mahanta allegedly receiving around ₹50,000 per month as remuneration from the AMDC. Investigators are also examining alleged financial irregularities that reportedly caused a loss of approximately ₹5.60 crore to the corporation. Alleged irregularities in recruitment-related transactions are also part of the probe.
The ED is further examining allegations concerning the alleged misappropriation of funds meant for retired employees. Reports claim that a laptop worth around ₹2 lakh was allegedly purchased using such funds and subsequently given to Mahanta’s child.
Another allegation under scrutiny involves the alleged diversion of approximately ₹15,000 per month in the name of a cleaning worker, according to reports.
The probe is not limited to Mahanta’s association with the AMDC. Allegations of financial irregularities have also been raised in connection with his tenure as Director of the Assam Rural Infrastructure and Technology (ARTFED) and in the Handloom and Textiles Department.
The ED’s questioning is expected to focus on the alleged transactions, the use of funds and Mahanta’s role in financial decisions taken during his various assignments.
However, the allegations against Mahanta have not been established, and the investigation remains ongoing. The ED’s summons is part of the inquiry and does not by itself establish criminal liability.
