The government on Thursday unveiled the Delhi Master Plan 2047, a long-term framework aimed at transforming the national capital into a globally competitive, inclusive, environmentally resilient and economically vibrant city.
Aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the plan seeks to address the needs of a population expected to reach nearly 3.2 crore, while promoting economic growth, technological innovation, improved liveability and the preservation of Delhi’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal said around 30 to 40 lakh new flats would be added in Delhi over the coming years, with a significant number of them being standard residential units. He said the initiative would help meet the growing housing demand in the national capital.
The Minister also said a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) policy had been prepared to strengthen development along public transport corridors and improve connectivity.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu said the Master Plan provides a roadmap for vertical growth, transit-oriented development, quality housing and the creation of knowledge, education and medical hubs. He said the framework would also ensure the preservation of Delhi’s cultural heritage.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the people of the national capital had been waiting for the new master plan. She noted that Delhi covers an area of around 1,484 square kilometres and faces several developmental constraints.
Keeping these limitations in mind, she said, the plan has been designed to ensure the holistic development of the entire city, including rural areas, unauthorised colonies and planned areas.
Gupta said the plan also takes into account Delhi’s growing transport requirements and pollution challenges, while ensuring that housing needs across different sections of society are addressed.
The Master Plan 2047 is expected to provide a comprehensive framework for Delhi’s future urban expansion, infrastructure development, housing and public transport, while balancing growth with environmental sustainability and heritage conservation.
Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Union Capital Development Secretary D. Thara, Delhi Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma and Delhi Development Authority Vice Chairman N. Saravana Kumar were also present at the unveiling ceremony.
