Assam will create eight new co-districts, taking the total number of operational co-districts in the state to 47, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday.
The expansion is aimed at bringing government administration closer to the people and improving access to public services, particularly for residents of remote and rural areas.
In a post on X, Sarma said 39 co-districts are already operational in the state. He said the creation of eight additional units would further strengthen the state’s efforts to improve the ease of governance.
“Good governance begins when the Government comes closer to the people,” Sarma said, highlighting the role of the co-district model in making administration more accessible to residents.
The latest expansion is expected to help people access government services more conveniently and reduce their dependence on distant district headquarters for administrative matters.
The Assam government has been promoting the co-district system as part of its broader effort to decentralise governance and ensure that public administration reaches people at the grassroots level.
