SC to constitute committee to examine allegations of police excesses against student protesters in Delhi

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would constitute a high-powered committee to examine allegations of police excesses against student protesters during recent demonstrations in Delhi, as well as allegations of violence against police personnel.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana said the formal order constituting the committee would be issued on Wednesday after receiving suggestions from the parties on other members to be included in the panel.
The committee is expected to comprise retired Supreme Court and High Court judges, a former Director General of Police and a former CBI director. It will conduct an independent fact-finding exercise and will be provided with the necessary facilities to carry out its work.
The court said the panel would also examine allegations of sexual assault and online harassment of women protesters, as well as alleged victimisation of vulnerable persons through social media.
The bench further indicated that video footage and CCTV recordings of the violence during the July 20 Parliament march in Delhi would be handed over to the committee for examination.
The Supreme Court was hearing a batch of petitions alleging police excesses against student protesters during the agitation, along with allegations of violence against police personnel.
