India strengthened their position in the first Test against Sri Lanka after taking a commanding 178-run first-innings lead at the end of Day 3 in Galle.
India were bowled out for 462 in their first innings after adding just two runs to their overnight score of 460 for nine. Devdutt Padikkal was the top scorer with a brilliant 167, while KL Rahul made 82 and Dhruv Jurel contributed 51.
For Sri Lanka, Prabath Jayasuriya took four wickets, while Keshara Nuwantha claimed three and Asitha Fernando picked up two.
Sri Lanka were then dismissed for 284, with Indian bowlers maintaining a strong grip on the hosts' batting line-up. Manav Suthar led India's attack with four wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja took three.
Jadeja also reached a major milestone, becoming only the fourth player in Test cricket history to complete 4,000 runs and 350 wickets. He is the first Indian left-arm bowler to achieve the feat.
For Sri Lanka, Sonal Dinusha scored his maiden Test century, while Niroshan Dickwella made a valuable 80.
India's substantial lead puts them in a strong position heading into the final stages of the Test. The second and final match of the series will be played in Colombo from August 23.
