Tripura Celebrates 80th Independence Day with Flag Hoisting Across the State

Tripura joined the rest of the country in observing the 80th anniversary of India's independence on Saturday, with ministers, legislators and senior officials hoisting the national flag at ceremonies held at the state Secretariat, the Chief Minister's residence, the Pradesh BJP office and district venues in Khowai, Dharmanagar, Agartala and Teliamura, as the day was marked with parades, cultural programmes and tributes to the country's freedom fighters.
Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha hoisted the national flag at his official residence in Agartala on Saturday morning, with Tripura Police personnel performing the national anthem during the ceremony. He also raised the tricolour at his personal residence. Speaking afterward, Dr Saha credited the nationwide Har Ghar Tiranga movement, running since 2022, with lifting patriotic feeling across the country and helping young people learn about the sacrifices of those who won the country's freedom. He pointed to gains made over the past twelve years in security, infrastructure, employment and connectivity, and referred to recent military operations, including Operation Sindoor, as evidence of the country's growing strength. On the state's own progress, he said Tripura's economy had expanded and that it now stood second among the northeastern states in per capita income.
Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu also extended his greetings to the people of the state. Speaking to reporters after paying tribute at Gandhighat in Agartala on Saturday, the Governor pointed to India's large population of young people and its standing as the world's biggest democracy, and spoke of the goal of building a developed nation by 2047. It is learned that Tripura's official Independence Day programme, coordinated by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, had also listed the state level function at Assam Rifles Ground as the day's central event, the venue where the flag has traditionally been hoisted at the main state ceremony in past years.
Earlier in the morning, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath hoisted the national flag at the state Secretariat premises in Agartala, where he inspected a joint parade of the police forces and took the salute. Addressing the gathering, Nath said it was the responsibility of every citizen to protect the country and to identify the enemies of independence, and called on people to pledge themselves to building a developed and self-reliant India by 2047. He said he considered it a matter of fortune to have hoisted the flag at the Secretariat on the 80th Independence Day, and that watching the tricolour rise once again was a reminder that independence was not merely an achievement but an ongoing responsibility. From the agricultural fields to the electricity sector, he said, the state would work to build a self-reliant and powerful India in every area, adding that the day bound the country's past glory to its commitments for the future.
At the Pradesh BJP office in Agartala, party president Abhishek Debroy took part in a flag hoisting ceremony in the presence of party workers. Chief Minister Manik Saha and Papiya Dutta were among those present. Following the flag hoisting, the leaders paid tribute to the martyrs of the freedom struggle. Debroy said the day was an occasion to remember, with reverence, the martyrs whose supreme sacrifice had given the country the legacy of an independent India. He said genuine independence was not limited to freedom from colonial rule alone, and that patriotism, civic responsibility and an unbroken commitment to progress were its true meaning. He called on citizens to unite and pledge themselves to building a strong, self-reliant, prosperous and progressive India, one in which the rights of every citizen would be protected and equal development ensured for all.
Meanwhile, the main government function in Khowai district was held at Khowai Airport Ground, where the state's Minister for Science, Technology and Forest, Animesh Debbarma, hoisted the national flag. Officials present included District Magistrate Rajat Panth, District Superintendent of Police Jagdishwar Reddy, Sub-divisional Magistrate Nirmal Kumar Jha, several MLAs and other public representatives. Contingents from the Tripura State Rifles, Tripura Police, the women's police wing and the National Service Scheme, among other groups, took part in the parade. After the flag hoisting, the minister and other guests present paid tribute to the freedom fighters and those who had sacrificed their lives for the country. Addressing the gathering, Debbarma said protecting the country's independence was the responsibility of every generation, and that citizens needed to understand the true meaning of independence in order to move forward with commitment to the nation. "Every generation of ours must take responsibility for protecting independence. Living a life free of fear is part of independence," he said. Local artists later performed solo and group dances on patriotic themes, lending the ground a festive atmosphere.
In Dharmanagar, the main event was held, as in previous years, at the Bir Bikram Institution ground, drawing considerable enthusiasm among students and residents. A total of ten platoons took part in the parade. Minister Santana Chakma hoisted the national flag and inspected the marching contingents. North District Magistrate Chandni Chandan, North District Superintendent of Police Abinash Rai and MLA Jahar Chakraborty were among the senior officials present. In the concluding part of the programme, children from various schools performed dances, after which Chakma presented awards to the schools and participants who placed first and second in the dance and cultural competitions.
At the official residence of Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma in Agartala, Independence Day was observed on Saturday morning with due dignity, in an event attended by personnel of the Tripura State Rifles and the police. Debbarma hoisted the national flag to open the programme, after which those present paid tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters who had sacrificed themselves for the country's independence. The gathering recalled the history of struggle and sacrifice behind India's independence, and reaffirmed a commitment to protecting the country's sovereignty, integrity and democratic values. Debbarma later exchanged greetings with the TSR and police personnel present and personally distributed sweets among them. Extending greetings to the people of Tripura and the country, he said independence was not simply an occasion for celebration but was bound up with a long history of sacrifice and struggle, and he called on citizens to move forward together on the path of development, peace, unity and harmony.
In Teliamura, the main event for the subdivision was held at the Bhagat Singh Mini Stadium in Dashomighat on Friday, where MLA and Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy hoisted the national flag. Teliamura Municipal Council Chairman Rupak Sarkar, the Sub-divisional Magistrate and the Sub-divisional Police Officer were among the officials and dignitaries present. School students and administrative personnel took part in a march past and a physical training display, after which schoolgirls performed patriotic songs and dances. Residents of Teliamura observed the day with dignity and enthusiasm, recalling the history of the independence movement and the sacrifices of the country's martyrs.
The celebrations across Tripura formed part of the nationwide Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, now in its fifth year and being observed across the country from August 9 to 17. This year's edition carries a special focus on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, and includes Tiranga rallies and processions, exhibitions, concerts, bicycle and motorcycle rallies, illumination of important landmarks and rangoli programmes, among other activities organised at the district, block and panchayat levels across the state.
