Security Tightened Across Assam Ahead of Independence Day

Security has been intensified across Assam ahead of Independence Day, with authorities stepping up surveillance at key locations and venues where celebrations are scheduled, officials said on Friday.
The heightened security measures come amid boycott calls issued by militant groups, including ULFA(I) and NSCN/GPRN, urging people to stay away from Independence Day celebrations.
The groups have called for a boycott of Independence Day programmes across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland.
However, unlike previous years, the outfits have refrained from calling a general strike, citing the ongoing flood situation in parts of Assam. Instead, they have appealed to people to refrain from participating in official celebrations and boycott Independence Day programmes.
Security agencies have increased vigilance at sensitive locations, while additional security personnel have been deployed at important public places and venues hosting Independence Day events.
Authorities have also intensified surveillance to prevent any untoward incident and ensure the smooth conduct of celebrations across the state.
