Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday interacted with members of the Indian Army contingent that won 16 medals at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Army athletes secured eight gold, seven silver and one bronze medal, contributing significantly to India’s overall medal tally of 39 at the Games.

Highlighting the performance of India’s women boxers, Singh noted that they had won four of the country’s six gold medals in boxing. He said their achievement would inspire more young women to take up the sport and consider a career in the defence forces.

According to the Defence Ministry, personnel from the Indian Defence Forces won 18 of India’s 39 medals at the Commonwealth Games, with the Indian Army accounting for 16 and the Indian Navy for two.
