Tripura felicitates commonwealth games gold medalist Asmita Dey

Tripura’s sporting achievement received a special recognition on Wednesday as the state government felicitated judoka Asmita Dey, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in judo.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha presented Dey with land allotment documents and a cheque of rs 10 lakh in recognition of her historic achievement. The felicitation marked the athlete’s first visit to Tripura since her triumph at the Commonwealth Games.
Congratulating the young judoka, Saha said Tripura was creating increasing opportunities for talented sportspersons and expressed confidence that more athletes from the state would achieve success at national and international levels. He also recalled the contributions of celebrated Tripura sportspersons, including Arjuna Awardees Dipa Karmakar and Montu Debnath.
Asmita’s journey to the international podium began in Tripura. She received her early judo training at a centre in Belonia, South Tripura, before joining the Sports School in Agartala. She later moved to Bhopal for advanced training, where she also completed her graduation. During her formative years, she competed in district and state-level events and subsequently participated in national competitions, Khelo India and Asian Games events.
The judoka has been serving in the Uttar Pradesh Police for the past two years. Her Commonwealth Games gold has brought renewed attention to Tripura’s sporting talent and is expected to inspire a new generation of young athletes in the state.
The state government’s gesture of providing land and financial assistance is being seen as a recognition of Dey’s contribution to Indian sport and her role in bringing national and international acclaim to Tripura.
