India enjoyed a historic day at the World Athletics U20 Championships as Basant Kumar Meghwal and Shahnavaz Khan won silver and bronze medals in the men’s high jump and long jump respectively.
Meghwal, the reigning Asian U20 champion, cleared a personal-best 2.21 metres to secure silver in the high jump. Algeria’s Younes Ayachi won gold, while Great Britain’s Otis Poole took bronze.
In the long jump, Shahnavaz Khan produced a best effort of 7.84 metres to claim the bronze medal.
The two medals took India’s tally at the championships to three, helping the country equal its medal haul from the 2021 and 2022 editions.
The achievements of Meghwal and Khan also marked a historic milestone, as they became the first Indian athletes to win medals in the high jump and long jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships.
