Assam Startup Wins National Handloom Award for ‘Soil-to-Silk’ Model

Assam-based startup Marvella Associates has won a National Handloom Award for its innovative ‘Soil-to-Silk’ model, which seeks to provide an integrated experience of the state’s traditional silk-making and weaving ecosystem.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to representatives of the startup on Friday at an event organised to mark National Handloom Day.
The ‘Soil-to-Silk’ model highlights Assam’s rich sericulture and handloom heritage by bringing together different stages of the silk-making process, from the production of silk to traditional weaving. The initiative aims to offer visitors and consumers a closer understanding of the craftsmanship, traditions and communities that form the backbone of Assam’s silk industry.
The recognition at the national level underscores the potential of innovative approaches to preserve and promote Assam’s traditional handloom practices while creating new opportunities around its indigenous textile heritage.
Assam is renowned for its distinctive silk varieties, including Muga, Eri and Pat silk, which have long been an integral part of the state’s cultural and economic identity.
The National Handloom Award recognises outstanding contributions to the handloom sector and celebrates individuals and organisations working to preserve traditional weaving practices and promote innovation in the industry.
