The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday following persistent protests by Opposition members over several issues, including the alleged police action against students demonstrating over the NEET issue.
When the House reassembled at 2:00 PM after an earlier adjournment, it approved a proposal to extend the time for the presentation of the report of the Joint Committee on the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025, until the last week of the Winter Session, 2026.
Amid the continued uproar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman moved the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, for consideration and passage. The Bill was passed without discussion due to the disruptions. Following its passage, Presiding Officer Sandhya Ray adjourned the House for the day. The Lok Sabha will reconvene at 11:00 AM on Friday.
Earlier, when the House met at 11:00 AM, members paid tribute to the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Speaker Om Birla said the world first witnessed the devastating consequences of nuclear weapons through the bombings and reaffirmed the House's commitment to a world free of weapons of mass destruction. Members also observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims.
Soon after, Opposition members raised the issue of the alleged police action against students protesting over NEET and demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. As the protests continued, Speaker Om Birla urged members to allow Question Hour to function, stressing that Parliament is meant for discussion, accountability, and meaningful debate. With the disruptions continuing, the House was first adjourned till 2:00 PM and later for the remainder of the day.
