Tripura Plans Major Expansion of Higher education sector: Minister Kishore Barman

Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman on Thursday unveiled an ambitious roadmap to increase the state's Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education from the present 22 per cent to 75 per cent by 2030, describing the goal as a crucial step towards building a skilled and developed India.
Addressing the 'Uccha Shiksha Sanglap' dialogue at the administrative building of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University, the minister said expanding access to higher education would require coordinated efforts from the government, educational institutions, teachers and students alike.
Barman stressed that the state government is committed to creating modern academic infrastructure, improving campus facilities and ensuring a conducive learning environment across colleges and universities. He said students must remain at the centre of all policy decisions and those actively participating in academic activities should receive priority in institutional planning.
The review meeting focused on strengthening higher education infrastructure, resolving administrative challenges and enhancing coordination between students, faculty members and college authorities.
The minister announced that MBB University, MBB College, BBM College and the Law College campus would be developed as model institutions by 2030.
Calling for greater accountability at the institutional level, Barman urged college authorities to resolve routine issues locally instead of forwarding every matter to the state government, saying such an approach would improve administrative efficiency.
The minister also informed that the proposed Technical University and Women's University, which have already received legislative and gubernatorial approval, are expected to commence academic activities soon through student admissions. He added that the decision regarding the proposed Medical University would be taken by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha.
Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder and senior officials of the Higher Education Department were present at the meeting. The minister reiterated that achieving the 2030 target would not only improve enrolment figures but also help build an inclusive, modern and quality-driven higher education system in Tripura.
