The situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) escalated overnight after protesters refused to disperse, with reports alleging that security forces opened fire on demonstrators during a midnight crackdown in Rawalakot.
According to reports from the region, gunfire was heard as security personnel moved to clear protest sites. An Intelligence Bureau official stated that the firing occurred while large numbers of women and children were participating in the ongoing demonstrations. Many women and children have reportedly remained at the protest site for nearly 50 days, with dozens more joining the movement on the previous day.
Data released by the Human Rights Council of Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir, updated as of yesterday, claims that the unrest has resulted in 80 fatalities.
The protests initially began as a movement demanding improved basic amenities and greater development in the region. However, the demonstrations have since expanded, with protesters announcing plans to march towards Muzaffarabad to protest what they describe as a heavily manipulated election. They allege that Pakistan's extensive interference in the administration of PoJK has undermined the democratic process and hindered the region's development.
