Benchmark domestic equity indices extended their winning streak for the fourth consecutive session on Monday, driven by strong gains in IT stocks and broad-based buying across sectors.
The Sensex climbed 544 points, or 0.7 per cent, to close at 78,639, while the Nifty surged 391 points, or 1.6 per cent, to settle at 24,774.
The broader market also ended on a firm note. The NSE Midcap 100 index rose 1.2 per cent, while the Smallcap 100 index gained 1.3 per cent.
Among the Sensex constituents, 21 of the 30 stocks closed in the green. IndiGo was the top performer, rising 4.2 per cent. Tata Consultancy Services gained 3.6 per cent and Infosys advanced 3.5 per cent. On the other hand, Sun Pharma declined 2 per cent, while Bharti Airtel and Maruti Suzuki fell 1 per cent each. Tata Steel also ended marginally lower, down 0.4 per cent.
On the sectoral front, 26 of the 28 BSE sectoral indices ended higher. The IT and Focused IT indices led the gains, rising 2.7 per cent each. The Services index advanced 2 per cent, while the Industrials index added 1.3 per cent. In contrast, the Hospitals index slipped 0.6 per cent and the Healthcare index edged down 0.2 per cent.
Overall market sentiment remained positive, with the BSE market breadth favouring advances. A total of 2,837 stocks gained, 1,552 declined, and 206 remained unchanged.
