The flood situation in Assam has shown significant improvement as waters continue to recede across the affected districts. Over 37,000 people are still taking shelter in 109 relief camps set up in the worst-hit districts of Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat and Charaideo. Sivasagar remains the most affected district, with 66 relief camps accommodating more than 30,000 displaced residents.
Government agencies are continuing relief operations on a mission mode, ensuring the distribution of essential supplies to affected communities. Non-governmental organisations and volunteers from across the state are also supporting the relief efforts by providing food and other essential items to flood-hit villages.
Meanwhile, the flood death toll has risen to 68 after two more flood-related deaths were reported from Sonari in Charaideo district yesterday evening.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, all major rivers in the state are now flowing below the danger level, except the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh in Golaghat district. The district administration has advised people to stay away from the river as a precaution.
In a social media post, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state is steadily recovering from the floods and that power supply is being restored in affected areas in a phased manner. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to restoring essential services at the earliest and ensuring that every affected community returns to normalcy.
